They were tied to the feet with sinews or leather strips, and used <strong>pointed sticks to push themselves<\/strong>, similarly to cross-country skiing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From bone to metal: the birth of the blade<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As technologies evolved, skates also changed. During the Middle Ages, particularly in the <strong>Netherlands<\/strong>, the first models appeared with <strong>iron blades<\/strong> mounted on wooden bases. Unlike bone skates, these allowed a true gliding motion, without the use of sticks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The intense cold and the capillary presence of frozen channels made the <strong>skating an everyday means of transportation<\/strong> in the Netherlands. The pioneer was <strong>Jackson Haines<\/strong>, an American who combined the movements of skating with ballet techniques. From the Christmas rinks of European cities to major international arenas, their history continues to evolve.
