From the central loggia of St. Peter's Basilica resounded a name destined to mark an era: <strong>Leo XIV<\/strong>. But who is really this pontiff who came from the United States? What is his story? From a young age, he was distinguished by a mature faith and a spirit of service that led him, in 1977, to join the<strong>Order of St. Augustine<\/strong>, one of the oldest and most intellectually vibrant religious congregations in the Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After studies in theology and canon law, he graduated from the <strong>Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas<\/strong> in Rome. But his heart looks far, toward the mission. And so, in the early 1980s, he left for the <strong>Peru<\/strong>, where he would spend more than 20 years, living among the poorest communities in the diocese of <strong>Chiclayo,<\/strong> working comemissionary, pastor, educator and vocation leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This long experience in Latin America forged in him a simple pastoral style, close to the people, oriented toward listening and dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rise in the Church: bishop, prefect, cardinal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2014, Pope Francis named him <strong>bishop of Chiclayo<\/strong>, recognizing his profound work in the field of social justice and evangelization. His figure also emerges globally when, in the <strong>2023<\/strong>, he is called to Rome as <strong>prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops<\/strong> and president of the <strong>Pontifical Commission for Latin America<\/strong>. This is a sign of deep trust, but also of a growing consensus among the cardinals on his profile as a sober, dialogic and determined leader. In the Consistory of September 2023, he is created <strong>cardinal<\/strong>, becoming a full member of the College of Cardinals and on the shortlist of papabili for a future Conclave. In <strong>Conclave of May 2025<\/strong>, after the death of Pope Francis, Prevost emerged already in the first ballots as one of the strongest candidates. His balance between reform and tradition, his global experience and his pastoral style win the consensus of the College of Cardinals. On the fourth ballot, he is elected <strong>266th pontiff in the history of the Church<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Name Chosen: Why \"Leo XIV\"?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The choice of name <strong>Leo XIV<\/strong> is not accidental ( the name Leo had not been chosen for over 120 years ). It is a direct reference to <strong>Leo XIII<\/strong>, pontiff between the 19th and 20th centuries, known for the encyclical <em>Rerum Novarum<\/em>, who opened the Church to the theme of social justice and work. A modern pope, but rooted in doctrine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this gesture, <strong>Leo XIV<\/strong> is meant to indicate a bridge between the past and the future: a papacy rooted in tradition but able to look at the world with new eyes. It is also a sign of moral and spiritual strength: the name \"Leo\" evokes courage, firmness and leadership, qualities the Church needs in the contemporary world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his first address, Leo XIV spoke of a Church \"that is not afraid of dialogue but remains faithful to the truth,\" and asked the faithful to \"pray for me to be a shepherd, not a prince.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>An American pope, but universal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leo XIV is the <strong>first U.S. pope in history<\/strong>. A choice that underscores how much the Church today is <strong>global<\/strong> and increasingly open to the cultural and spiritual peripheries of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it is also the <strong>first modern Augustinian pontiff<\/strong>, bearer of a communal spirituality of dialogue and soul-searching. His episcopal motto, <em>\"Christus nostra pax\"<\/em> (\"Christ is our peace\"), summarizes the heart of his message: a reconciled, inclusive and Gospel-oriented Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conclusion: A Papacy of Continuity and Renewal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leo XIV is a pope who does not divide but unites. A global pastor, capable of listening and acting.
