Livigno 2026: Italy's Little Tibet Prepares for Big Olympic Event

Among the highest mountains in Lombardy, on the border with Switzerland, rises the Livigno, one of Italy's most beloved alpine resorts. Known as the "Little Tibet" for its dry climate, high altitude and picturesque valleys, Livigno is undergoing a real metamorphosis in preparation for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Milan-Cortina 2026.

The Kingdom of Cross-Country Skiing

Livigno will be the beating heart of the competitions of cross-country skiing. Its altitude (1,816 m above sea level) and long winters with abundant snow make it perfect for the sport. The valley already offers dozens of kilometers of groomed trails, but the Olympic course is tailored for men's, women's and mixed races.

The new cross-country stadium, located in the "central plain" area, will be an elite facility, equipped with temporary grandstands, space for athletes and a loop track with technical climbs and descents that will test even the most experienced cross-country skiers.

During the Paralympics, Livigno will also host competitions in paralympic nordic skiing, confirming itself as a place of inclusion and sports for all.

A New Olympic Training Center

Livigno will not only be a race venue, but also a training base. With the expansion and modernization of its Aquagranda Center, already used by many national teams for high altitude training, will become one of the most modern sports hubs in Europe.

Equipped with an Olympic swimming pool, high-performance gymnasium, medical center and hypobaric chambers, Aquagranda will serve athletes before and during the Games. This legacy will be one of the great post-Olympic assets for sports tourism.

Hospitality Between Nature and Design

In Livigno, where alpine architecture meets sustainability, hospitality is an integral part of the experience. In the run-up to 2026, many hotels and chalets have been renovated according to green building criteria, and new accommodations have been designed to blend harmoniously into the landscape.

Although a permanent Olympic village is not planned, many accommodations will be converted temporarily into residences for athletes and delegations. In addition, the entire area will be served by a low-emission public transportation system, with electric shuttles and outdoor parking to reduce traffic in the village.

Sustainability and Alpine Vision

Livigno has seized the opportunity of the Olympics to accelerate its path toward a green valley. New public works are powered by renewable energy sources, urban mobility is increasingly electric, and even track lighting will be energy-efficient.

Protection of the natural environment-from forests to mountain pastures-is at the heart of the Olympic development plan. Not surprisingly, many routes will be laid out along the lines of the landscape, minimizing the impact on the local ecosystem.

Livigno and the Future: From Olympics to Outdoor Sports Capital

Livigno won't just be the star for two weeks. The goal of the municipality and the region is to transform the Olympic legacy into a definitive momentum toward international sports tourism. With summer and winter events, world-class infrastructure, and an identity increasingly linked to wellness and nature, Livigno is preparing to be much more than an Olympic venue-it will be an example of how a small valley can open up to the world without losing its soul.
