Cagliari celebrating the Olympic Torch: Sardinia embraces the Games on Dec. 14

Cagliari coast

Cagliari, Dec. 14, 2025 After Nuoro, the Olympic Flame lands in the Sardinian capital, bringing with it the energy and universal values of sport. The Cagliari stop represents one of the most anticipated moments of the symbolic journey of the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympic Torch, in an island where tradition, hospitality and sports culture come together in a day that promises excitement and participation.

The heart of the Mediterranean welcomes the Flame

Lit in Olympia on Nov. 26, 2025, the Torch passed through central Italy before reaching Sardinia. After Nuoro, Cagliari will host the relay on Dec. 14, in a day that will unite sports, citizenship and Olympic spirit.

The route will run along iconic points in the city:

  • Poetto waterfront, among the most beloved in Italy
  • the historic streets of Castello and downtown
  • the scenic finish in the central Piazza Yenne or, alternatively, in the area of the Bastion of Saint Remy, where the Olympic brazier will be lit.

The protagonists of the relay race

As in each stage, it will be citizens who become heroes for a day. Among the chosen torchbearers:

  • Young Sardinian athletes, ambassadors of sports values
  • Representatives of local associations and schools
  • volunteers selected through the national call launched by CONI
  • Former Olympic and Paralympic athletes, who will carry aloft the torch of memory and Italian pride

Each participant will walk about 200 meters, forming a symbolic chain of passage between generations and communities.

A city in celebration: culture and sports at the center

The arrival of the torch will be the occasion for a large celebration spread throughout the city, with a program of side events promoted by the City of Cagliari and the Organizing Committee:

  • Olympic workshops for children
  • photo exhibitions on Sardinian sports
  • concerts and traditional dances
  • Olympic-themed light installations
  • Sports villages with disciplines to try

The city will be decked out with flags, banners and themed scenery, transforming into an open-air Olympic stage.

Sustainability and innovation: the "green" flashlight

The flashlight that will be carried through the streets of Cagliari is made of recycled and recyclable materials, powered by bio-LPG, and rechargeable up to 10 times, fully respecting the environment. Events planned in the city will also follow sustainability criteria, with plastic-free areas, recycling collection points and use of renewable energy.

A historic step for Sardinia

Cagliari is no stranger to major sporting events, but the Torchlight stage takes on a special significance: it is an opportunity to reaffirm the island's role in the national scene, promote sports tourism and give visibility to the Sardinian talents who train passionately every day in local gyms and fields.

Sardinia proudly participates in this national narrative by joining the 63-day journey that will culminate in Milan on Feb. 6, 2026, at the Opening Ceremony of the Milan Cortina Winter Olympic Games.

On December 14, 2025, Cagliari will write a page of Olympic history. It will not just be a relay race: it will be an occasion to celebrate sport as a tool for community, hope and the future. The flashlight will not only light up the streets of the city, it will ignite the pride of an entire region.
