Amid the spectacular peaks of Valtellina, Bormio is preparing for a triumphant return to the Olympic stage. Known the world over for its legendary Stelvio slope, this Lombardy gem will take center stage in the men's alpine skiing competitions at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Games. But behind the sports glamour, there is a story of commitment, modernization and love for the mountains.
The Stelvio Track: Challenge and Tradition
Bormio is synonymous with the Stelvio, one of the most technical and challenging runs on the World Cup circuit. At 3,250 meters long, with an elevation gain of more than 1,000 meters, the Stelvio is famous for its brutal verticality, spectacular jumps and adrenaline-pumping turns such as the "Carcentina" and the "Ciuk."
In preparation for the Olympics, the slope has undergone modernization work: new snowmaking equipment, upgraded safety systems, and expanded areas reserved for athletes, media, and the public. The goal is to ensure top-level performance and pure spectacle for fans.
Redevelopment of the District and Lift Facilities
In addition to Stelvio, the entire Bormio 2000-3000 ski area was involved in the Olympic project. The ski lifts were improved in terms of energy efficiency and accessibility. In particular, the intermediate stations were adapted to support the influx of athletes, technical staff, and the international public.
The company Bormio Ski has also invested in a more sustainable internal mobility system, with electric vehicles and optimized logistics for race days.
Hospitality and Athletes' Village
Bormio, already known for the quality of its accommodations and its historic spa, has begun a process of hospitality redevelopment in preparation for the Games. Although it will not host a permanent Olympic village, temporary housing will be provided to accommodate athletes and delegations, with an eye to energy efficiency and integration with the landscape.
The goal is twofold: to provide comfort for participants and to ensure a useful legacy for local tourism, which will be able to benefit from the new infrastructure even after 2026.
An Accessible Mountain
To facilitate the arrival of thousands of spectators, the rail link between Tirano and Milan will be upgraded, and environmentally friendly shuttle services will be established to reach the slopes. All with smart traffic and reservation management to avoid crowding and reduce the event's carbon footprint.
An Olympics in Respect of the Environment
As with all Olympic venues, the watchword in Bormio is. sustainability. The intervention on the infrastructure followed criteria of minimal environmental impact and maximum reuse. In fact, all improvements will be usable by the territory even after the Games, with direct benefits for ski schools, tourism and future competitions.
Bormio Between Past Glories and Olympic Future
Bormio is no stranger to the international scene. It hosted the World Ski Championships in 1985 and 2005, and every year it hosts the men's World Cup downhill. But the return of the Olympics is something more: it is a consecration and a new departure.
In 2026, amid the icy curves of the Stelvio and the cheering of the Alps, Bormio will write another page of legend. And its mountain will once again speak to the whole world.
