In the beating heart of Lombardy, Milan is preparing to experience a historic chapter with the arrival of the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The city, already a symbol of innovation and design, is being transformed to welcome athletes and spectators from around the world through an ambitious urban and infrastructure redevelopment plan.

Santa Giulia Arena: The New Temple of Sports

In the evolving Santa Giulia district, stands the Santa Giulia Arena, also known as PalaItalia. Designed by British architect David Chipperfield in collaboration with Arup, this state-of-the-art facility will host ice hockey competitions during the Olympics and luge field hockey in the Paralympics. With a capacity of 16,000, the arena will also be a focal point for post-Olympic cultural and musical events.

Porta Romana Olympic Village: From Railway Yard to University Hub

The former Porta Romana railway yard is being transformed into the Olympic Village, intended to host athletes and delegations during the Games. The project, worth 330 million euros, will convert the area into student and social housing after the event, contributing to the urban and social regeneration of the area.

Other Strategic Facilities

  • Unipol Forum of Assago: It will host the women's field hockey tournament due to its capacity and modern infrastructure.
  • Milan Fair Rho: It will be temporarily transformed to accommodate speed skating competitions, with the installation of a rink within the exhibition halls.

Mobility and Accessibility: A City Fit for the Olympics

Milan is also investing in sustainable mobility to ensure efficient travel during the event. Enhancing subway lines, creating new bike lanes and implementing additional public transport services are at the heart of the urban plan.

A Lasting Legacy

The transformations taking place will not end with the end of the Games. Sports facilities, infrastructure and redeveloped areas will be available to the citizenry, promoting sports and culture. Milan is thus bidding to become an international model of sustainability and urban innovation.
